It's Christmas...Wait, Where'd Thanksgiving Go?
Oh look guys, it's Christmas already! Wait, where'd Thanksgiving go? I know we had it here somewhere. My goodness time flies when things get busy...and when you get sick. Man do the chores pile up when you ignore them because you'd rather sleep. So here I am, standing in my now freshly cleaned kitchen wondering how quickly I can mess it up with Christmas cookies for people. Of course there's the deciding what cookies to make, how many to make, who to make them for, how to get them there, and of course, how to do all this without disturbing the kids to much. Flour + children = disaster of epic proportions. Well at least with my kids. I always laugh when I see these adorable families and nearly perfectly clean children while making cookies. I'm wondering why my fairy godmother isn't making sure my kids are not covered in flour, frosting, and flurries of cookie decorations making it look like a Christmas bakery exploded on them, and on me...oh well. That's what baths are for.
Do you ever find yourself at Christmas time doing nothing but checking off lists? The list of house cleaning (though for me that's daily unfortunately), who to get presents for, what presents to get and then the list of stores to get them at, the addresses for who you have to ship to, shopping for food both regular and holiday, Christmas cookies, more cleaning, decorating, events such as ice skating, caroling, seeing Santa at the mall and getting a tree, guest lists for various parties (for once I don't have that going on phew), oh and my favorite, more cleaning! (Heavy on the sarcasm here guys.) All the while we drink our peppermint coffees, hot cocoa, and mulled apple ciders and stuff our faces with amazing food. And yet, amidst all this wonderful chaos, we forget the most important list we need to check. The one that reminds us Christmas isn't about the food (though it's amazing), the presents (tons of fun), or even the events (which sometimes get to be a bit much). The one list that reminds us to sit down with our families and remember what Christmas is really about. It's right there in the name. Christ. That wonderful baby boy who is a gift from God to all mankind.
So while we are going about our crazy lives running into the Grinches in them, trying to be Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer saving Christmas, and go play with Frosty the snowman, let's maybe pause for a moment like the Grinch, and remember what Christmas is really about.
“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”
