When Life Throws Lemons
"When life throws you lemons, make lemonade!" I have no idea where I first heard that old saying, but it's one that really rings true in our lives. For those of you who don't have kids, having a newborn can be terrifying at times. Like when they start throwing up everything they eat. It's about as much fun as salt on an open wound then drowned in lime juice. As someone who's accidentally done that, let me tell you it freaking hurts! Let me back up and explain.
Everything was right as rain for the first few days when we brought our little boy home, and things were going surprisingly well all things considered. Sam was adjusting well, Clay was eating and sleeping well, and Josh (formerly known as Gamer) and I were actually getting a little sleep. It was lovely. Until it wasn't. Day five rolled around and things seemed normal (well as normal as can be with a newborn and a toddler) until Clay decided to violently throw up everything he'd eaten. And not just once. Oh no, over and over and over again. I called the on call doctor pretty worried. One of the things that he mentioned was the possibility of pyloric stenosis which basically means that the food he was eating wasn't getting through his stomach into his intestines. Thus not getting the nutrients he needs to grow. My father had this when he was an infant and so knowing what it was, and how they fix it, freaked me out! We got him to our doctor the next day and waited back for news after having been sent up to the hospital for an ultrasound (the second in his five day life out in the world). Near the end of the day, we finally heard back with the good news that it was not pyloric stenosis. We celebrated!
While that is certainly not the only lemon life tossed our way this last 3 weeks, it was certainly the scariest. And the only one that is really worth sharing. But all in all we have just done our best to make lemonade out of the lemons tossed our way. Our kids certainly can be lemons, but they mostly add the sugar in our lives. Despite the migraine that has hung on for the last week and a half, and the terrible twos, and of course the whole new baby addition, we have been dining on lemonade.
Tonight was a night of being exhausted as I over did it a little today. Pretty sure I'd have earned another serious death glare from my doctor. But unfortunately it couldn't be helped. So, while I had planned on making a fabulous dinner of pork chops, mashed potatoes, and broccoli with homemade cheese sauce, we instead wound up with mashed potatoes, and corn from a can due to the pork chops still being frozen, the broccoli I had bought going bad, and the cheese sauce being way to much work for nothing. While very tasty as I made heart attack taters, not exactly what I'd call totally healthy. Please understand this is what Josh and I ate. Sam had a much healthier dinner than us that also included what we were eating, she just had other things to eat as well. What are heart attack taters? I thought you might ask. Here's my homemade mashed potatoes that should never be served with gravy.
Baby red potatoes
Butter
Sour cream
Garlic
Salt
Pepper
Cheddar cheese
Parmesan cheese
Mozzarella cheese
Monterrey jack cheese
Mix to your taste. Eat at your own risk. Not recommended for high blood pressure, high blood sugar, diabetics, lactose intolerance, anyone who is health conscious, and anyone with a risk of heart attacks.
There you go. Amazing wonderfulness in a dish that could likely kill a horse. But hey, why walk into the grave in pristine condition when you can slide in with chocolate in one hand, coffee in the other, a few extra curves playing rock & roll saying "wahoo what a ride!"?
With that I bid you all good night and enjoy your lemonade!
