Fallin' for Fall

If you've been reading this blog for the last few years you'll know that in my book there is no season quite like fall. And I'll continue saying that every year. I love fall. The colors changing, the weather cooling, the hot soups boiling, the apple cider, and of course the pumpkin spice lattes. It also means all my cozy sweaters come out, and I begin to decorate for all the warm colors of fall. The reds, and yellows, and oranges. And of course you can't forget all the little critters scurrying around doing their best to gather the last bit of food for winter before hibernating or migrating. Right now outside my window a flock of robins are playing and eating getting ready for their journey south. The colors of the trees are beginning their change, and the grasses are turning brown. The days are getting shorter, and of course the rains are setting in.
Here at Hidden Forest the fall setting in means we have to start setting up for winter and even more so, setting up the nursery for little Clay as he's due in October. We have to finish up the nursery, get wood, finish getting the freezer packed, get the pantry restocked, and get the guest room repacked and organized. At least with having a washer and dryer allows me to keep up on laundry now. That is a wonderful feeling. I know that come winter I can have warm clothes for my family all washed and cleaned without having to drag them out to the laundry mat during the awful weather. Once I know the wood is in, and the pantry/freezer are full I'll feel like my family is ready to handle whatever bad weather heads our way. The guest room can be a winter project, but I'd rather just have it done. Most people "spring clean," I "fall clean."
I have to say one of my favorite things about fall is the pumpkin spice lattes. While I'm not a huge pumpkin fan, I do love my PSLs. I was so excited when I found a pumpkin spice coffee creamer! I do have the stuff to make my pumpkin spice lattes year around, but they just aren't the same. There's just something that can't beat a fresh espresso in the fall as you wander the store to get the last minute things for the holidays. Be it Halloween, or Thanksgiving.
I do love cooking for the holidays in the fall. Lots of warm food to fill chilled bodies, and good company. Or at least you hope it's good company. Sometimes you just never know. Family events are always something that can be both looked forward to and dreaded at the same time. For example, you may look forward to seeing everyone, but there's always that one person you've never really gotten along with all that well. So how do you deal with that? Me? I just do my best to stay in the kitchen. It's kinda my domain/kingdom. People tend to enter at their own risk. And well since not many people in my family are over the top fabulous cooks and would much rather have a glass of wine in the living room (not that I'm not having wine in the kitchen but shhh, don't tell. I don't want them thinking there's wine in the kitchen, just the living room. Giggle.) I generally don't have to worry about to much human interaction at family events if I so choose.
With everything else that comes with the fall is Sam's birthday. And this year, I'm stumped as to what to get her. Yeah, I know clothes, socks, shoes and all, but I'm thinking something fun. While I plan on getting her some shoes, I just don't know what to get her that would be fun. A little couch to go with her little chair? Or maybe I need to stop over thinking it and just go shopping and see what I fall in love with. I've been hunting on amazon.com for about an hour or so and still very little luck. Though I did find some super cute canopies that I could use to decorate her room with. That could be fun for her. Any ideas? Shopping online just isn't the same as shopping in a mall where you can actually see the product and decide if it's right for you. I really should go shopping. It's just kind of a hassle with Sam and being pregnant to do it alone when you are attempting to shop for birthday presents. Especially when you know your hubby wants to go with you. So, I should probably just see if I can get a babysitter and make a date with my man to go birthday shopping as well as nursery shopping. Hmmmm. Ah well, at least we could throw in Christmas shopping while we are at it. It's fall...why not?
Which brings to mind the question of how many of you have you Christmas shopping started or have already finished? I know I've got the extended family already done, and now I just need to do the immediate family. Just not entirely sure what I'm going to do for some of them. More shopping I suppose. If I can get it done before Clay decides to make an entrance that would probably be best though. Hopefully, I can pull it off.
Well my bloggers, I think I've rambled enough for one day. Though to be entirely honest it's actually a post that has taken a few days to write to do having been running around like a chicken with my head cut off. So, I finally sat down to finish what I had started several days ago. Now, I'm going to start lunch for the munchkin and myself, and then take a nap. I'm bushed. As little Sam would say "Nigh nigh".
