Moving Day
Well bloggers, today's the day we all say goodbye to Hidden Forest and move to our new home across the state, River View. I'll say one thing for this move. It's been crazy. River View was actually the last place that we looked at in the new city. But we liked it so much we did the application on the spot and got a hold on a place as soon as possible. Due to being sick on a regular basis with one thing or another and house sitting for the past month, we are mad packing even today. But as you know I'm not a morning person and needed something to wake me up before tackling the insanity. And with all my coffee stuff packed up and ready to go, I'm left with no coffee to top it all off with. That sucks probably the most as I seriously need a good cup of joe this morning. Thankfully we will be coming back next week to finish up the move by tossing everything that is left into a storage unit.
So just because we are moving and moving is one of those things that I've done far to much of, I thought I'd post some packing hacks that I've discovered over the years. Here goes nothing.
1. Don't stress the move. (I keep telling myself this everyday and yet to no avail but hey, I'm trying.)
2. Make sure to label every box with not only the room that it goes in but what's in the box as well. I find that when I go to unpack, knowing not only what room it goes in but also the contents allows me to pull out the super important stuff (like the coffee makers) first. Things like the bathroom are usually packed pretty well into one big box.
3. Buy or get way more boxes than you think you need. Let me tell you right off the bat, you will always find that you need more boxes than you think. You'd be amazed at how much stuff you actually have. No matter how many times I move, I always find I need more boxes.
4. Try not to murder anyone when you start getting testy because of the stress. This is kind of a big one. The more stressed out you are the harder it's going to be to get things moved and packed. So if you need to, don't be afraid to say you need to walk away for a few minutes and then come back to it. It's allowed I promise.
5. Pack when your kids are asleep. Oh who am I kidding, kids don't freaking sleep.
6. Go box by box, not room by room or whatever else stupid thing they tell you. I've tried the whole packing room by room thing, but in the end, half the stuff in the kitchen actually belongs in the studio, and stuff in the studio belongs in the bedroom, and so on and so forth.
7. Drink lots of coffee and play loud music. This is what motivates me to get stuff done, for you it might be something else, like softer music and a cup of tea. Whatever you do to get cleaning done around the house is the same thing you are going to use to get the house packed.
8. Bribery when moving is not a bad thing. Tell your kids they get a treat for packing their stuff in a certain time limit. Tell the husband a special something (like his choice of meal or a day of gaming or whatever he likes) is all his if he buckles down and gets stuff done, tell yourself more coffee waits at the end of this whole shebang. Also, if you need movers, call in friends using a home cooked meal, or baked goods as payment. I often tell people I pay in food.
9. Get lots and lots of packing paper. You have a shocking amount of glass things.
And last but not least.
10. Start your packing way early. (Though I don't think there is a single person I know, me included, that has ever had that actually work out for them. But hey, posterity and all that.)
Well my dears, it's off to the races with me. Time to run! And wish me luck.
