Will It Ever End?
I find myself asking that question a lot lately...will it ever end? The answer. No, it doesn't. Life is full of endless things. Good, bad and indifferent life is filled with them all. Something are wonderful, and yet with those same wonderful things, tend to come rather nasty things. For example, children are a wonderful amazing gift and one that I wouldn't trade for the universe and all it's wealth. Terrible twos on the other hand, I could do without. Not the being two mind you, just the sass, the constant getting into things, the "no no mommy", the back talking, the...well you get the idea. See, wonderful and nasty often go hand in hand. However, without nasty we wouldn't know what wonderful was. It's life's balance. Light and dark, good and evil (though honestly I think we could do without the evil end of that balance), hope and despair.
Now, where is all this coming from you ask. Probably from the fact that I've been wrestling with the whole life's balance of pain in the *** versus the wonderful things. Lately, it's seems to be a lot of pain in the butt end of the balance, and I'm wondering when the pendulum is going to swing the other way for a moment. Knowing my luck...not for a while. But that's when the appreciation for the tiny things comes in handy. If one is always expecting some grand goodness after a trial, one is always going to be looking for said grand goodness. The goodness comes in the everyday things (granted so does the pain in the butt, but hey there it is). The simple things like a running hug from your child, or a kiss from your lover, or the reminder that friends love you. These are the things that keep us going. Where is this all going or better yet, where is it all coming from? Well the short answer to that is the last few weeks of insanity and, quite frankly, hell.
Josh and I spent the last week house sitting for his parents watching their three dogs and horse. A Malamute, two Boston Terriers, and a Tennessee Walker. Now, while the little dogs drive me nuts sometimes, I do love the Malamute and the Walker. They make up for the little rugrats. However, I'm still not a person who loves little dogs just in general. That being said, I tolerate the little sized ones, but Josh likes one of them a lot. The other...eh, whatever. Now that I've set the scene, I'll explain the week day by day.
Saturday: I woke up knowing we needed to get to the in-laws but puking up my guts. So we waited around for two hours for the on call doctor to get back to us. Mind you at this point I've been sick more often than not over the past few weeks. Finally we give up and head into an urgent care doctor in town. While I'm waiting at the doc's, Josh and the kids run out to the in-laws to let the dogs out of their crates for a little while until I'm done. I'm expecting to be in there for at least a few hours. Nope, I'm in and out in less than 45 minutes! Talk about awesome. Handed a prescription to be be filled at the Fred Meyer across the street and a bottle of water, I head out into the freezing rain and cold to the store while I wait for Josh to get into town with the kids. I knew we also needed to run to Costco and pick up formula for Clay as we were out. I get the prescription dropped off, and walk over to Costco to meet Josh and the kids. We got the few items we needed including Moana (cute and clean movie for all parents out there). Picked up the prescription and finally headed back out to the in-laws where we would spend the rest of the week until late the following Sunday.
Sunday: Josh and I had a lunch planned with a friend but in my being sick and such I had forgotten to bring a spare set of clothes and my some of my undergarments. NO WAY was I going to go to lunch free floating. Thus a mad dash to our house 45 minutes away was in order. Knowing we had no time to pack the rest of the stuff we needed we simply got ready at our house and dashed out the door to return after lunch. Lunch went well, and soon we were headed back out to our house to finish the few things we needed before settling in at mom and dad's for the rest of the week. I was due to leave the following morning for a quick visit with Author and my grandparents.
Monday: After finally crawling into bed around 1:00 am, Josh roused me at 6:00 am so I could get a decent start on the day. This included curling my hair, which only took an hour or so (insert eye roll here as you well know on a good day I spend 5 minutes on my hair). I then discovered that between the time I had gotten up and the time I finished my hair, it had begun to rain buckets of water down. This meant that not only was my hair that I had worked so hard on was now toast despite the half bottle of hair spray, but that I would also be hydro planing most of the way down to my destination. it was controlled hydro planing, but still not fun and more than a little nerve wracking. When I was about 10 minutes out from meeting my grandparents for lunch before meeting up with Author for the evening, I called them to see where abouts they were. They were running a bit late which allowed me to stop for coffee...or would have if I hadn't gotten lost and turned around and sent on another highway only to be turned back around and finally arrive at Starbucks and ordered as my grandparents pulled into the parking lot of the restaurant across the parking lot that we were meeting at. It was wonderful to see them again, and it allowed them to meet Clay for the first time. They enjoyed trucking the kids around Toys R Us. Then it was off again to meet Author at the hotel. Granted by this time I'd had two cups of coffee at the restaurant and chugged my now cold espresso from Starbucks not to mention the glass or two of water I had also had. You can imagine how much I needed to find a bathroom asap. But with the two kids I was a it frantic on how to get them out of the car, into the hotel, checked in, and get up to the room without peeing my pants. Thankfully, Author had arrived at the hotel the same moment I did. As I started to bolt out of the car to grab the kids she rounded the corner to my car. With a quick glance, and a "hi, stay with the kids, love you" I dashed into the hotel to get checked in and find my way to the closest bathroom. Thankfully the very sweet desk clerk noticed my discreet little dancing and directed me to the bathroom around the corner and down the hall. Apparently I took the corner to sharp as I landed in the gift shop before realizing that he had meant a couple feet further and then around the corner. Finally all checked in and the kids in the room with Author and me dragging the last of the stuff up to the rooms, I of course almost dropped the last bit of my coffee. And by almost, I mean that I caught it mid air as a spray of coffee splattered on the floor and on me. What I didn't realize was that it had landed on my face too. With only a little ribbing from the very sweet desk guy, I was finally headed back up to the room to get the kids down for a nap and finally give Author a proper hug and hello. We had a bunch of fun for the rest of the day.
Tuesday: Still dumping buckets of rain we decided to head to the zoo. Assuming it was just rain, we made a quick stop off at the store to fetch a couple of umbrellas so as to keep up mostly dry while we wandered the animals. But by the time we got to the zoo (a harrowing experience let me tell you), the wind had picked to to a nice freezing chill. Add in rain and you have a recipe for disaster. Thankfully there was an awesome children's museum in the same parking lot as the zoo. Now that was fun...and we managed to stay warm and mostly dry. Soon though it was time to say goodbye and make our way back to the hotel to drop Author off at her car. (I think we both peed our pants in fright and possibly laughter a few times on the drive back. Someone really aught to redesign the roads there.) Then it was a hydro planing trip back to the in-laws. Having had to eat out so much the past 24 to 48 hours I was ready to be back and make a home cooked meal. Only to discover that we really didn't have the proper groceries for that. Lots of freezer food, and some hamburger patties, but not much in the way of raw ingredients. I did manage to make some pasta, so it worked out.
Wednesday: I woke up just as tired as I had gone to bed and so did the kids. We were all worn out and decided that instead of trying to truck all the way home just to turn around and come right back, we'd do it the next day, and just go grocery shopping for the day. Into the store we ran, picked up donuts for Daddy and his work crew, and headed back home for lunch and naps. While we all were very tired I still had the basic chores to do when we got home. Then I started dinner and we were off and running once again. With dog pee on the floors in three different rooms, and dog poop on the front porch, I knew that was going to be less than fun to clean up. Oh well.
Thursday: I was woken up early once again by my little Clay and at this pint having been sleeping on the couch for several days, I was starting to feel the last of actual rest. And the fact that I needed a shower horribly. With that in mind, I scrubbed out the shower and tub, and then noticed it not draining as well as it should have been. I didn't think to much of it as that happened sometimes. It was when I let the dogs out a short time later and saw the clean out cap to the sewer and sewage all around it that I realized the sewer had backed up and blown the cap. Oh yeah, so much fun...not. I called Josh and as he was due home shortly I just made sure to not use the water or flush the toilets not wanting to cause a bigger problem. After fighting to get the pipe cleaned out (or so we thought) we washed up and headed back in. with Lysol sprayed everywhere and the gloves we used pitched, we figured everything seemed to be ok and went to bed.
Friday: Groggy from another night on the couch, I got up to use the bathroom and discovered the toilet flooded the bathroom. Racing to shut off the water and bleach the floors and everything near by, I finally said screw it! I cleaned up, packed up the kids in the car, and headed home for the day after feeding the dogs and the horse. After grabbing coffee, and something for a quick breakfast at my favorite coffee stand near our house, we ran home. While the day wasn't to bad, mostly we all napped in our own beds waiting for Josh to meet us, I did discover that our phone was dead. That being the hand held. And of course with it being dead that meant I couldn't page it, and no matter how hard I looked for the darn thing I couldn't find it anywhere. I just figured whatever...I'll have a day of peace and quiet. As if that ever actually works out. Finally we headed back to the in-laws and once there I raced back into town to Home Depot to fetch an industrial strength snake to clean out the pipe. That turned into an amusing trip and one filled with some new knowledge.
Saturday: Crawling out of the couch once again, Josh and I knew we had to tackle the drain before doing anything else. It only took a couple of hours, and reaching my hand (with a glove that got flooded) down into the sewer pipe to get it cleaned out. SOOOOOOOOOO GROOOOSSSSSSSS!!!! I will never do that again if I can possibly avoid it! Once everything was running and draining the rest of the day wasn't to horrid. Just a lot of cleaning and running around.
Sunday: More cleaning and the in-laws came home. But by the end of the day, we were so tired that we knew we couldn't drive safely home. So, it was another night on the couch.
Monday: I was so excited to be home and get to packing, but unfortunately Josh couldn't find his keys and so he had to take my car...which meant I was there until he got off and could pick up me and the kids. But at last we made it home.
Like I said, a bit of a crazy week. Though when you are going through it, it seems so much worse until it's done and you can actually process through it all. For me that means posting it here. It gives me the chance to look at things from the outside, and turn what was a long and stressful week into something less crazy. It helps. So thanks for being there to read the insanity.
Next time you are going through something that seems like it won't end, just remember, you're not alone. We all are in this crazy thing we call life together. We have someone watching out for us from above. And that my bloggers is all that matters for the moment.
